Marmara Region Images - Travel Information - Turkey Photo Guide

The Marmara region is located in the northwestern corner of Turkey, surrounding the sea of Marmara. At the heart of the region lies the supercity Istanbul, Turkey's most populous city. Istanbul is so rich in history and culture that, on this website, it is considered as a separate region. The Marmara region itself has also a long, important history and there are plenty of remnants of this past for the visitor to explore.

The archaeological site of Troy takes you back to the roots of European civilization. In İznik, the ancient Nicaea, the first ecumenical council of Christianity took place and under Ottoman rule, it became famous for its Iznik tiles. Bursa, on the silk road, is known for its famous Green Mosque and was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. The role of capital was taken over by Edirne in Thrace which led to the construction of the splendid Selimiye Mosque, a masterpiece of Mimar Sinan that dominates Edirne's skyline. There is also the battlefield of Gallipoli, where one of the bloodiest battles of World War I took place. These are just a few of the many historical sites in the region.
